About Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis Truck

The Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis is a 28-tonne, 10-wheel chassis with a cab and nothing behind it. You supply the body. That is the deal, and it explains the one number that matters here: 17,500 kg. Read that number correctly. It is not payload. It is the weight budget you and your body builder share, and every kilogram of tipper, tanker or flatbed comes out of it before your cargo does. As of July 2026, the price sits near ₹34.50 lakh ex-showroom, roughly ₹37 lakh on road, with body fabrication extra. The 5,660cc H-series BS-VI six makes 200 hp and 700 Nm. Wheelbase is 4,600 mm. Gradeability 43 percent. Full air brakes with ABS. It needs AdBlue.

Review Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis

Most trucks arrive finished. This one arrives half-built, and that changes how you should read every number on its spec sheet. Start with the one everybody gets wrong.

Ashok Leyland 2820 Chassis Payload: 17,500 kg Is a Budget, Not a Promise

Gross vehicle weight is 28,000 kg. The bare chassis weighs about 10,500 kg. What is left, 17,500 kg, is what Ashok Leyland calls payload.

It is not your payload. Not yet.

Bolt on a flatbed at roughly two tonnes and you keep about 15,500 kg. Fit a steel tanker, nearer four tonnes, and you are down to 13,700. Order a 16 cubic metre tipper with its hoist and subframe and you will surrender something close to five tonnes, which leaves you around 12,500 kg of actual cargo.

Ashok Leyland proves this themselves. The 2820 RMC, built on this same chassis, is rated at 12,740 kg payload. Work backwards from 17,500 and the mixer barrel accounts for nearly all the difference.

So before you sign anything, ask your body builder for a tare weight in writing. Not an estimate. A number. Because that number, subtracted from 17,500, is the only payload figure that will ever appear on your registration certificate, and it is the one the RTO weighs you against.

You will see 18 to 20 tonnes quoted for this truck, including on this page today. Ignore it. Payload cannot rise when you add weight.

What the Cab Chassis Buys You, and What It Costs

Flexibility, mainly. The same 4,600 mm chassis takes a tipper, a tanker, an RMC mixer, a flatbed, a container skeletal or a car carrier. If your work is specialised, or you already have a fabricator you trust, this is how you get exactly the truck you need rather than the closest one Ashok Leyland happened to build.

The cost is time and money that nobody quotes you upfront. A tipper body runs ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh on top of the truck. Fabrication takes weeks. And in most states you cannot complete registration until the body is fitted and inspected, so the truck sits.

Worth saying plainly: if a standard 16 or 20 cubic metre tipper does what you need, buy the factory-bodied variant instead. It is cheaper overall and it drives away registered.

Engine, Brakes and the AdBlue You Have to Budget For

The H-series is a 5,660cc six-cylinder BS-VI diesel. 200 hp, 700 Nm, six-speed box. Gradeability of 43 percent, which is what the 6x4 driveline is for.

Two hundred horsepower is the lowest rating in the 28-tonne class. The Tata Signa 2823.K and the BharatBenz 2823RT both come in around 230 for money that is not far off. On a loaded ramp you will notice.

Braking is where this truck earns respect. Full air dual-line, ABS as standard, anti-roll bar, reverse parking assistance. Ashok Leyland's smaller trucks skip ABS altogether. Here it is fitted.

Then there is AdBlue. The BS-VI H-series uses selective catalytic reduction, so it needs Diesel Exhaust Fluid, topped up regularly, bought separately, and tracked. It is a running cost and a small administrative headache, and this page is one of the few anywhere that admits it.

Top speed is capped at 60 km/h.

Mileage, and the Number That Will Actually Decide Your Margin

Ashok Leyland publishes 2 to 3 kmpl in the city, 3 to 4 on the highway. The single "4 kmpl" you see quoted everywhere is the top of the highway band. Treat it as a ceiling, not an average.

Run 60,000 km a year and you will get through 15,000 to 24,000 litres of diesel. Price that at your local pump rate and compare it against the ₹34.50 lakh you paid for the truck. Fuel wins, comfortably, inside two years.

That is the real economics of a 28-tonne tipper, and no amount of marketing about efficiency changes it. The 220-litre tank covers roughly 660 km at 3 kmpl.

On the plus side, Ashok Leyland's dealer network is the deepest in Indian commercial vehicles, and AVTR aggregates are shared right across the range. Spares are rarely why one of these sits idle.

Ashok Leyland 2820 Chassis Price in 2026, On-Road Cost and Who Should Buy

Ex-showroom is around ₹34.50 lakh. Road tax, registration, first-year commercial insurance, permit and fitness will add ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5.3 lakh, which puts you at roughly ₹37 lakh to ₹39.8 lakh on the road. Body fabrication sits on top of all of it. Financed at ten percent down over five years, the EMI works out near ₹66,700 before the body.

Buy the chassis if your application is specialised, or if you need a body no factory offers, or if your fabricator builds lighter than Ashok Leyland does.

Skip it if a standard tipper suits you. And look hard at the Tata Signa 2823.K if power matters, because 30 extra horses on a loaded 28-tonne climb is not a rounding error.

Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis Pros & Cons

What We Like

  • 17,500 kg chassis payload, the highest figure in the 2820 range, because nothing has eaten into it yet
  • Takes any body: tipper, tanker, RMC mixer, flatbed, skeletal, car carrier
  • Full air dual-line brakes with ABS standard, plus anti-roll bar and reverse parking assist
  • 43 percent gradeability and a 6x4 driveline for loaded site ramps
  • Ashok Leyland's dealer network is the deepest in India, and AVTR parts are shared across the range

What We Don't Like

  • Body fabrication adds ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh and several weeks, and no on-road quote includes it
  • Registration often cannot complete until the body is fitted and inspected
  • 2 to 4 kmpl. Diesel will outspend the purchase price inside two years
  • Needs AdBlue, topped up and tracked, as an ongoing cost
  • 200 hp is the lowest in the 28-tonne class; rivals offer around 230
  • Air conditioning is optional, not standard

FAQs about Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis

Dimensions

What is the wheelbase of the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis?

+
4,600 mm. That is what the 4600 in the name refers to. Ashok Leyland also offers this chassis on a 3,900 mm wheelbase, which suits shorter tipper bodies.

How much chassis length is available behind the cab for body building?

+
Ask Ashok Leyland for the body-builder drawing before you commit. The usable frame length behind the cab on the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis governs what body will fit, and published overall-length figures for this truck are copied between variants and are not reliable.

What is the ground clearance of the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis?

+
273 mm, on 295/90R20 tyres. Bear in mind the finished height depends entirely on the body you fit, so plan gate and dock clearances after fabrication, not before.

Use Case

What bodies can be fitted to the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis?

+
Tipper, tanker, RMC transit mixer, flatbed, dropside cargo, container skeletal, car carrier. The Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis is sold specifically so you can build what you need on it.

Should I buy the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis or a factory-bodied tipper?

+
Buy the factory tipper if a standard 16 or 20 cubic metre body does the job. It costs less overall and drives away registered. Choose the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis when your application is specialised, or when your fabricator builds a lighter body than the factory does, since every kilo saved is a kilo you can carry.

How long does body fabrication take on the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis?

+
Weeks, not days, and it varies by fabricator and body type. In most states, registration of the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis cannot be completed until the body is fitted and inspected, so the truck earns nothing during that period. Factor it into your cash flow.

Mileage

What mileage does the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis give?

+
Ashok Leyland publishes 2 to 3 kmpl in city running and 3 to 4 kmpl on the highway. The 4 kmpl headline on most listing sites is the top of the highway band, not an average. The finished body and its weight will pull real figures lower still.

Does the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 need AdBlue?

+
Yes. The Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 uses a BS-VI H-series engine with selective catalytic reduction, so it needs Diesel Exhaust Fluid topped up regularly. Budget for it and track it, because running dry will put the engine into a de-rated limp mode.

How far will the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis go on a tank?

+
The tank holds 220 litres, which gives roughly 660 km at 3 kmpl. Heavy site work at 2 kmpl brings that closer to 440 km.

Reviews

Is the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis reliable in daily commercial use?

+
The AVTR platform uses a reinforced chassis frame with heavy-duty axles, and the ZD-class aggregates are shared across the range, so spares move quickly through the dealer network. Owner feedback on the Ashok Leyland 2820 centres on strong pulling under load and predictable maintenance. Workshop turnaround varies by dealer.

What is the cabin like on the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis?

+
It is a D+1 day-and-sleeper cabin with power steering, an adjustable driver seat and a driver information display. Air conditioning on the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis is listed as optional, not standard, so check what is actually fitted to the unit you are quoted.

Is 200 hp enough once a body and full load are on the Ashok Leyland 2820?

+
It is the lowest rating in the 28-tonne class. The Ashok Leyland 2820 pulls loaded ramps on its 6x4 driveline and 43 percent gradeability, but the Tata Signa 2823.K and BharatBenz 2823RT offer around 230 hp for similar money, and that gap shows on long climbs.

What is the payload of the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis?

+
17,500 kg, and read that carefully. It is the chassis payload on the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis, measured with no body fitted. A tipper body will consume around 5,000 kg of it, an RMC mixer roughly 4,760 kg, a flatbed about 2,000 kg. Whatever remains is your cargo.

What is the gradeability of the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4?

+
43 percent, which is Ashok Leyland's published figure. Some listings show 46 or even 64 percent for the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4. Neither is credible for a loaded 28-tonne truck. Work with 43.

Does the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis have ABS?

+
Yes. Full air dual-line brakes with ABS come as standard on the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis, along with an anti-roll bar and reverse parking assistance. Ashok Leyland's lighter commercial vehicles often go without it.

Price

What is the on-road price of the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis?

+
Roughly ₹37 lakh to ₹39.8 lakh, against an ex-showroom figure near ₹34.50 lakh. Road tax, registration, commercial insurance, permit and fitness account for the difference. Body fabrication is not included in that, and typically adds ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh for a tipper.

What EMI applies to the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis?

+
On a ₹34.50 lakh ex-showroom price, a ten percent down payment on the Ashok Leyland AVTR 2820-6x4 4600/Cab Chassis is ₹3,45,000. The remaining ₹31,05,000 over 60 months at 10.5 percent comes to about ₹66,700 a month, before the cost of the body.

Is the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis cheaper than the factory tipper variants?

+
On the sticker, yes, because it has no body. Once you pay a fabricator, the Ashok Leyland 2820 cab chassis usually lands at or above the factory-bodied price. You are buying control over the body, not a discount.
