About

The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS is the LE variant but with power steering. That is the difference, and for roughly ₹20,000 it is usually worth paying. What it is not is the air-conditioned variant. Ashok Leyland does not fit AC as standard on either the LE or the LS. Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS price is around ₹8.15 lakh ex-showroom, with an estimated on-road cost of ₹8.7 lakh to ₹9.3 lakh. Its 1,478cc TDCR diesel makes 59.1 hp and 158 Nm. GVW is 2,590 kg, rated payload is 1,375 kg, and claimed mileage is 19.6 kmpl. The load deck runs 8.2 feet long. There is no ABS, no hill hold, and no tubeless tyre option.

Expert Review

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Review

Most buyers move up from the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LE because they want a more comfortable truck. Half that expectation gets met. The LS gives you power steering. It does not give you air conditioning, and no amount of dealer talk changes that. Here is what you are actually buying.

What the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Adds Over the LE

Ashok Leyland sells the Dost Strong in three trims: LE, LS and LX.

Against the Dost Strong LE you gain power steering and a tiltable steering column. Everything else carries over. Same 1,478cc engine, same 2,590 kg GVW, same 1,375 kg rated payload, same 8.2-foot deck, same day cabin, same D+1 seat.

Power steering reads like a small line on a spec sheet. It is not. A last-mile truck turns, reverses and parks a hundred times a shift, and manual steering at low speed under load is heavy work. It is a common reason drivers leave.

What the LS does not add is air conditioning. Ashok Leyland does not fit AC as standard on the LE or the LS. It appears on the Dost Strong LX.

Worth knowing: Ashok Leyland markets the Dost Strong as offering car-like comfort for 14 to 15 hour freight operations. That claim reads differently once you know two of the three trims have no air conditioning.

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Engine, Braking and Performance

The 1,478cc three-cylinder TDCR diesel produces 59.1 hp at 3,300 rpm and 158 Nm between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. Ashok Leyland calls the tune i-GEN6.

You will see 70 hp and 170 Nm quoted for this truck across several listing sites. Those figures belong to the Dost+, a larger truck. Do not plan around them.

The gearbox is a fully synchromesh five-speed manual with a 215 mm single dry plate clutch. Top speed is capped at 80 km/h. Gradeability is 24.93 percent, so a loaded hill climb means second gear and patience.

Braking is vacuum-assisted hydraulic with a load-sensing proportioning valve, ventilated disc at the front and drum at the rear. The valve meters brake effort according to how heavily the truck is loaded, which is the right system for a vehicle that runs empty half the day. ABS is not fitted on any Dost Strong trim.

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Payload

The specification sheet lists a kerb weight of 1,275 kg, a GVW of 2,590 kg and a payload of 1,375 kg.

Add the first and the third. You get 2,650 kg, which is 60 kg more than the GVW allows. The three numbers cannot all be right.

Ashok Leyland and most listing sites publish 1,375 kg. A few publish 1,350 kg, which resolves the arithmetic almost exactly. Before you plan loads or price a contract around 1,375 kg, read the figure printed on the registration certificate of the truck you are buying. Overloading gets measured against that document, not against a website.

The deck is 2,500 mm long, 1,620 mm wide and 440 mm high. That is 8.2 feet by 5.3 feet, with a sidewall of about 1.4 feet. Low enough to hand-load sacks and crates without a ramp.

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Mileage and Running Cost

Ashok Leyland claims 19.6 kmpl, rising to 20 to 22 kmpl on the highway. Owners running loaded through city traffic report figures in the mid to high teens. Plan around 16 to 17 kmpl for urban work.

The tank holds 40 litres, so a full fill covers roughly 650 km at that rate.

Ashok Leyland warrants the Dost Strong for five years or two lakh kilometres, which is unusually long at this price. The Dost platform has been in production since 2011, so spares are everywhere and rarely the reason a truck sits idle.

Owner feedback is consistent. The engine and gearbox draw few complaints. The cabin draws most of them: basic trim, poor summer ventilation, and less space than a Tata Intra offers.

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Price in 2026

The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS price is approximately ₹8.15 lakh ex-showroom. That puts it between the LE at about ₹7.95 lakh and the LX at the top of the range. Ask your dealer for the variant-specific figure.

Add road tax, registration, first-year commercial insurance, permit and fitness charges, and budget ₹55,000 to ₹1.1 lakh on top. That gives an estimated on-road price of ₹8.7 lakh to ₹9.3 lakh, and it varies by state.

On finance, a ten percent down payment of about ₹81,500, over five years at 9.5 percent, works out near ₹15,400 a month.

Buy the LS if your drivers run city or semi-urban routes with heavy turning and you want to keep them. The step up from the Dost Strong LE buys the one feature that cuts fatigue most.

Buy the LX instead if shifts run past eight hours, because that is where the air conditioning lives. And if you need more payload for similar money, the Tata Intra V30 Gold carries 1,500 kg from around ₹8.23 lakh.

Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS Pros & Cons

What We Like

5
  • Power steering and a tiltable column over the LE, for roughly ₹20,000
  • 1,375 kg rated payload on a 2,590 kg GVW, with an 8.2-foot deck
  • 19.6 kmpl claimed, and a 40-litre tank stretches to roughly 650 km at realistic city consumption
  • Five-year, two-lakh-kilometre warranty, unusual at this price
  • LSPV braking meters effort to load, and Dost spares have been everywhere since 2011

What We Don't Like

4
  • No air conditioning. The LS does not have it, and neither does the LE.
  • No ABS, no hill hold, no tubeless tyres on any Dost Strong trim
  • Published kerb weight and payload exceed the 2,590 kg GVW by 60 kg
  • 24.93 percent gradeability and an 80 km/h ceiling rule out loaded hill and highway work

FAQ

FAQs about Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS

Dimensions

What are the overall dimensions of the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS?

+
The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS measures 4,485 mm in length, 1,670 mm in width and 1,845 mm in height, on a 2,350 mm wheelbase.

What is the ground clearance and turning radius of the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS?

+
Ground clearance on the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS is 177 mm and the turning radius is 5,850 mm. The turning radius is the figure that decides whether a delivery lane works for you.

What tyre size does the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS use?

+
The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS runs 185 R14 LT, 8-ply radial tyres on all four wheels. They are tube type. No Dost Strong trim offers tubeless.

Use Case

Is the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS good for last-mile delivery in cities?

+
Yes, and better than the LE for it. Power steering makes the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS far less tiring across a shift of repeated turns and reverses, and its 4,485 mm length works in lanes a larger pickup cannot enter.

Can the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS carry cement, bricks and construction material?

+
Yes, within the rated payload. Dense material means the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS reaches its weight limit long before the deck fills, so plan loads by payload rather than by deck volume.

Is the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS suitable for long shifts or intercity routes?

+
Not really. The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS tops out at 80 km/h and has no air conditioning, which makes long summer shifts hard on a driver. For that work, choose the LX.

Mileage

How far can the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS go on a full tank?

+
The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS holds 40 litres. At the claimed 19.6 kmpl that is close to 780 km, and at a realistic loaded city figure of 16 to 17 kmpl it is around 650 km.

Does load affect the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS mileage?

+
Yes. The 19.6 kmpl figure is a test-cycle number. Running the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS at its full 1,375 kg payload through stop-start traffic will pull it into the mid teens.

How does Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS mileage compare with the Dost CNG?

+
The Dost CNG claims 14 to 18 kmpl against 19.6 kmpl for the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS, but it burns cheaper fuel and carries 1,208 kg instead of 1,375 kg. Compare cost per kilometre and payload together, not kmpl alone.

Reviews

What do owners say about the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS?

+
Owner feedback on the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS splits cleanly. The engine and gearbox draw few complaints. The cabin draws most of them, with recurring mentions of basic trim, poor ventilation in summer and body panels that feel thin.

How reliable is the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS?

+
The Dost platform has been in production since 2011, and the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS uses proven mechanicals. Complaints cluster around cabin equipment rather than powertrain failures. The five-year, two-lakh-kilometre warranty covers the window most first-time buyers plan for.

Is the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS cabin comfortable?

+
The Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS has a D+1 day cabin with a sliding and reclining driver seat, a driver information display, a lockable glove box, a mobile charging point and a sliding rear window for ventilation. There is no air conditioning and no arm rest.

Price

What is the on-road price of the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS?

+
The estimated on-road price of the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS is ₹8.7 lakh to ₹9.3 lakh, against an ex-showroom figure of about ₹8.15 lakh. Road tax, registration, first-year commercial insurance, permit and fitness add ₹55,000 to ₹1.1 lakh. Delhi and Haryana sit at the low end, Maharashtra and Kerala at the high end.

Does the Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS hold its resale value?

+
The Dost range has a deep second-hand market, which helps liquidity when you sell an Ashok Leyland Dost Strong LS. Actual resale depends on kilometres run, accident history and deck condition. Ask a dealer for recent exchange values rather than trusting a published percentage.
