Govt Will Not Extend Electric 3-Wheeler Subsidy

A key government subsidy for electric auto-rickshaws is ending. The program will not be extended beyond this fiscal year. This decision is final, according to official sources.
Scheme Reaches Its Planned End
The purchase subsidy for electric three-wheelers is being phased out. A senior government official confirmed there are "no plans to extend this as of now." The program was always designed to be temporary. Its goal was to help the industry get started.
Why the Electric Auto-Rickshaws Subsidy is Ending
The government believes the market is now ready to stand on its own. Electric three-wheelers have achieved 32 percent market penetration. Officials state that after this 25-30 percent level, an industry should become self-sustainable. It no longer needs financial support to grow.
The Targets Were Nearly Met
The PM eDRIVE scheme has been largely successful. It supported over 2.54 lakh electric three-wheelers. This was close to its target of 2.89 lakh vehicles. The scheme was also "fund-limited," meaning it was only budgeted for a specific period and number of vehicles.
Automakers Wanted an Extension
Many vehicle manufacturers disagreed with the decision. They had argued for the subsidy to continue. They believed it was still needed to drive further adoption. This is in contrast to electric four-wheelers, which already lost their subsidy last year.
Subsidy Was Already Reduced
The end of the scheme does not come as a complete surprise. The subsidy amount was already cut in half earlier. It was reduced to Rs 2,500 per kWh. The total cap was set at Rs 25,000 per vehicle. The phase-out has been gradual.
What This Means for Buyers
The message for buyers is clear. If you are considering an electric three-wheeler, the clock is ticking. The financial incentive from the government will soon disappear. The era of subsidies is ending, and the market is entering a new, independent phase.
