Torsten Schmidt Named New CEO of Daimler India

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the maker of BharatBenz trucks, is getting a new leader. The company has announced that Torsten Schmidt will take over as Managing Director and CEO starting in early 2026.
This key leadership change is part of a broader global reshuffle aimed at strengthening DICV's position in the competitive Indian market.
Torsten Schmidt's Diverse Background
Schmidt is no stranger to the Daimler group or international markets. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of Mercedes-Benz in Brazil. He joined Daimler in 1997 and has since held senior roles across several countries, including Germany, India, and Japan. His experience spans production, sales, and finance, giving him a well-rounded view of the commercial vehicle business.
A Strategic Global Reshuffle
This transition is part of a coordinated global leadership strategy. In the same move, the current CEO of DICV, Satyakam Arya, has been named the designated President and CEO of Hino Motors in Japan. This highlights the depth of talent within the Daimler Truck organisation and its practice of moving leaders across its global operations.
Focus on DICV's Next Growth Phase
Schmidt’s extensive background, particularly his recent oversight of Finance and Controlling for Daimler Truck in Asia, makes him well-suited for this role. He will be tasked with guiding DICV through its next phase of growth. The company aims to further solidify the BharatBenz brand's market leadership in India and continue its strong export performance to over 60 countries.
A Vote of Confidence in the Indian Market
This appointment underscores the strategic importance of the Indian market for Daimler Truck AG. The Oragadam plant near Chennai is a crucial global hub, manufacturing vehicles not just for BharatBenz but also for the FUSO, Mercedes-Benz, and Freightliner brands. Putting a seasoned leader like Schmidt in charge signals a continued commitment to this operation.
A Smooth Transition for Continued Success
The planned leadership change ensures a smooth handover and continuity for DICV. With Schmidt's global expertise, the company is well-positioned to build on its strong foundation and navigate the future of the commercial vehicle industry in India and beyond.
