Govt Proposes Sound Alert System for Electric Trucks

Get ready to hear electric trucks and buses coming. The government has proposed a new safety rule that will make them generate an automatic sound alert to protect pedestrians.
What is the Proposed New Rule?
The Ministry of Road Transport wants to make an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) mandatory for all new electric trucks and buses. This system would automatically produce a sound when the vehicle is moving at speeds up to 20 km/h, making its presence known to those nearby.
When Will This Rule Take Effect?
The timeline is clear. For newly designed vehicle models, AVAS will be required from October 2026. For all existing models of electric trucks and buses, the rule will kick in from October 2027. This gives manufacturers ample time to adapt.
Why is This Sound System Needed?
Electric vehicles are incredibly quiet, especially at low speeds. This silence, while pleasant, poses a real risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users who may not hear them approaching. The AVAS is designed to solve this exact problem, making our roads safer for everyone.
How Does the AVAS System Work?
The system is smart and automatic. It activates at low speeds when tyre and wind noise are minimal. Once the vehicle reaches a higher speed (around 20 km/h), where natural operational sounds are sufficient, the alert system can turn off. This ensures safety without creating unnecessary noise pollution.
Is This a Global Practice?
Yes, India is following a well-established global standard. Countries like the United States, Japan, and those in the European Union have already made AVAS mandatory for electric and hybrid vehicles. This move aligns India's safety regulations with international best practices.
What Does This Mean for the Future?
This proposal is a significant and positive step. It shows a proactive approach to integrating new technology with public safety. As more electric trucks and buses join our fleets, this rule will ensure that the transition to a greener future is also a safer one for every person on the road.
