India Claims 57% of Global Electric 3-Wheeler Sales

There is a clear leader in the global transition to electric mobility. India accounted for an astounding 57% of all global sales of electric three-wheelers last year, according to a significant new international report.
This leading position emphasizes how important the nation is to the global shift to zero-emission vehicles.
The Report's Main Findings
The market for electric vehicles is expanding in India. The information was taken from the COP30 progress report of the Accelerating to Zero Coalition. It demonstrates that India is the world's second-largest market for electric two-wheelers in addition to being a leader in three-wheelers. This increase fits into a larger pattern, as light-duty EV sales worldwide increased from 14% to 18% in 2024.
Government Grants Encourage Adoption
This widespread acceptance was not a coincidence. One such motivator is supportive government policies. The initial cost of electric vehicles has been successfully lowered by programs like the PM E-Drive program and FAME subsidies. As a result, electric two- and three-wheelers are now priced similarly to their gasoline and CNG equivalents, making them a wise financial decision for both individuals and companies.
An Emphasis on Commercial Vehicles With High Impact
Now, the government is aiming for a larger target: trucks. Despite only accounting for 3% of all vehicles, medium and heavy-duty trucks are responsible for 44% of transportation-related emissions. With incentives for more than 5,600 electric trucks, the new PM E-Drive program marks a significant and timely move towards decarbonizing commercial transportation.
India's Strategic Ectrification is Praised
The International Council on Clean Transportation's (ICCT) managing director for India, Amit Bhatt, commended the emphasis. India is judiciously focusing on electrifying its two and three-wheeler segments, which are its major vehicle segments, and the benefits are obviously showing.
An International Framework for Developing Markets
Other nations now use India's success story as a model. India's tailored incentives are highlighted in the report as a promising model for growing EV infrastructure. This demonstrates that the electric transition presents a significant commercial opportunity in addition to being an environmental need.
