Tracking and Panic System Mandatory for CVs from April 2026
The transport department has made Vehicle Location Tracking Device and panic button installation mandatory for all commercial vehicles. From April 2026, fitness certificates will not be issued to vehicles lacking these safety features. The rule applies to buses, trucks, taxis, and school vans.
New Vehicles Come Pre-Installed with Safety Devices
New commercial vehicles already come with tracking devices and panic buttons fitted at the manufacturing stage. Older vehicles must get these devices installed through authorized agencies. Vehicle owners must link them to the department's portal for monitoring.
How the Panic Button System Works in CVs
Passengers can alert the control room by pressing the panic button during emergencies. The tracking device enables real-time location tracking of the vehicle. This helps authorities respond quickly to incidents.
Devices Must Meet AIS 140 Standards
The Vehicle Location Tracking Device must comply with AIS 140 standards issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. These devices use GPS and IRNSS technology for accurate location tracking. They send real-time data to the VAHAN server. The panic button triggers an immediate alert with the vehicle's live location to the central monitoring system.
15 Manufacturers Empaneled for Device Supply
The transport commissioner has empaneled 15 manufacturers to supply these devices. Companies working with Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Eicher are among the approved suppliers. Vehicle owners can check the list of authorized agencies on the department's official website.
Rule Enforced After July 2025 Inspection Drive
An RTO drive conducted in July 2025 revealed that most school vehicles lacked functional tracking and panic devices. The new rule aims to strengthen road safety standards, particularly for women, schoolchildren, and long-distance bus travelers.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Vehicles found without active devices after the deadline will not be granted fitness certificates. Fitness inspections are now being conducted in Prayagraj, Mirzapur, and Pratapgarh.
