Maharashtra to Pass A Dedicated Parking Policy for Commercial Vehicles

The Maharashtra government will create a dedicated parking policy for commercial vehicles. The decision comes after complaints about trucks and goods carriers choking roads in Thane and surrounding areas.

Commercial Vehicles Parked Illegally Across City Roads

MLC Niranjan Davkhare raised the issue at a Thane District Planning Committee meeting. He flagged rampant parking of commercial vehicles outside housing societies and along service roads. This is causing severe traffic bottlenecks and daily inconvenience for motorists.

No Structured Parking Policy Currently Exists

Davkhare pointed out that no structured parking policy is currently in place. He urged the urban development department to step in with a comprehensive framework.

Deputy CM Responds Positively

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde. According to Davkhare, Shinde responded positively and announced that the development department would formulate an appropriate policy to regulate commercial vehicle parking.

Growing Problem Across Maharashtra

The issue extends beyond Thane. Residents in Mumbai's upscale Juhu locality have also demanded a ban on commercial vehicle parking in residential lanes. Citizen groups there complain that trucks, tempos, and taxis have taken over roads, leaving residents with no parking space.

Policy Expected to Balance Freight and City Needs

Experts note that dedicated parking regulations for commercial vehicles are long overdue. India's freight tasks have grown rapidly with e-commerce and logistics expansion, but road space management has lagged. A well designed policy will need to consider proximity to freight hubs, hours of permitted operation, land availability and environmental impacts on communities.
