Mahindra Overtakes Tata with 34.48% CV Market Share

A Major Shift in the CV Market. The Indian commercial vehicle scene has a new leader. For the first time this financial year, Mahindra & Mahindra has overtaken Tata Motors in market share. October 2025 saw a dramatic reshuffle at the top.
Mahindra Takes the Lead with 34.48% Market Share
In a significant power shift, Mahindra captured a dominant 34.48% of the CV market in October. The company sold 37,188 units. This strong performance pushed them into the number one spot. It ends Tata Motors' long-held dominance for this period.
Tata Motors Slips to Second with 32.30% Market Share
Tata Motors, which had led the market all year, now holds second place. It secured a 32.30% share with 34,838 units sold in October. While still a powerful force, this marks a notable change in the competitive landscape. The race has tightened considerably.
A Battle All Year Long
This wasn't a sudden change. The tussle between these two giants has been building all year. Throughout 2025, Tata consistently held a share between 31% and 34%. Mahindra trailed closely, typically in the mid-to-high 20s. October's result is the culmination of Mahindra's steady growth trajectory.
The Rest of the Pack
Other players maintained their positions further back. Ashok Leyland secured a solid third place with a 15.35% market share. VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) held fourth with 7.05%. Together, Tata and Mahindra now command over two-thirds of the entire CV market.

What Drove the Change for Mahindra
Mahindra's success is linked to its strategic focus. Its acquisitions and new launches in the last-mile mobility segment have paid off. The company is aggressively targeting growth. Tata Motors, meanwhile, has plans to boost its own share to 40% by 2027 through a major demerger.
What Does This Mean Going Forward?
The CV market is now more competitive than ever. Mahindra's October victory proves it is a formidable contender. Tata Motors will not give up its historical lead without a fight. For truck buyers, this intense competition means better products and more innovation are on the horizon.
