Indian cities once ran their goods trade from inside crowded markets. Trucks were loaded on public roads. Godowns sat next to shops. By the 1970s — the traffic, noise and accidents became impossible to ignore. Then the state development authorities moved the whole trade to planned zones in every city.

Those zones are called Transport Nagar. Each one has transporter offices, loading bays, truck parking, godowns, weighbridges, and repair shops all in one place.

Below, I list every major Transport Nagar in India and explain what happens inside them.

What Is a Transport Nagar?

A Transport Nagar is a planned commercial zone where a city's road freight operations are concentrated.

It is a land-use category, not a company or a government office. The state development authority — LDA in Lucknow, KDA in Kanpur, JDA in Jaipur, VDA in Varanasi — acquires the land, lays the roads and allots plots to transport operators on lease.

Who works inside one:

  • Transport companies and their booking offices

  • Commission agents and load brokers

  • Fleet owners and independent truck owners

  • Palledars, the loading and unloading labour

  • Mechanics, tyre shops and body builders

  • Dhaba owners and tea stalls

The trade calls them TP Nagar or Transport Nagar Mandi. Both mean the same thing.

One clarification before you go further. Transport Nagar is also the name of a Lucknow Metro station on the Red Line, and of residential pockets in Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra. This article covers the freight hubs.

Why Transport Nagars Were Built

Three problems forced the shift.

Congestion

Loaded trucks parked on market roads blocked everything behind them. A single unloading operation could choke a street for hours.

Pollution and Noise

Diesel engines idling inside residential areas became a public health complaint long before anyone measured AQI.

Safety

Heavy vehicles moving through narrow city lanes killed people.

So authorities picked land on the outskirts, always with one condition: direct access to a national or state highway. That is why you will find almost every Transport Nagar sitting on a bypass, a ring road or an NH.

The second reason is the no-entry rule. Most Indian cities ban heavy commercial vehicles during daylight hours. A truck arriving from another state cannot simply drive to the shop. It stops at the Transport Nagar, the load is broken into smaller consignments, and small commercial vehicles carry it in after the no-entry window lifts.

That single rule explains why Transport Nagars still matter, even with load-booking apps on every phone.

Transport Facilities You Get Inside Transport Nagar

  • Transporter booking offices

  • Weighbridge (dharmkanta)

  • Godowns and warehouses

  • Fuel pumps, CNG points

  • Open and covered truck parking

  • Tyre shops and spare parts market

  • Loading and unloading bays

  • Body building and repair workshops

  • Palledari labour

  • Dhabas and driver rest rooms

  • Transport association office

  • Bank branches and ATMs

  • Police or traffic outpost

  • Customs facilities at port-linked hubs

Newer projects add EV charging points, CCTV coverage, driver dormitories and proper toilets. Older nagars often have none of these.

How a Load Moves Through a Transport Nagar

  1. Booking. The consignor approaches a transporter or a commission agent at the nagar and fixes a rate.

  2. Inward movement. Goods reach the godown by small commercial vehicles from inside the city.

  3. Consolidation. Several small consignments are combined into one full truckload.

  4. Documentation. The transporter issues a bill of lading, or goods receipt. The e-way bill is generated.

  5. Weighment. The loaded truck is weighed at the Dharmkanta where you get the weight slip for truck.

  6. Loading. Palledars load the vehicle. Loading charges are separate from freight.

  7. Dispatch. The truck leaves, usually at night once the no-entry window ends.

  8. Delivery. It reaches the destination Transport Nagar, where the load is broken again for last-mile delivery.

Quick Glossary

  • Bilty / GR — the goods receipt, your proof of booking

  • FTL — full truckload, you book the whole vehicle

  • PTL — part truckload, you share space and cost

  • Palledari — loading and unloading labour charge

  • Dharmkanta — public weighbridge

  • Dalali — the broker's commission

  • No-entry — daytime ban on heavy vehicles inside city limits

Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, India's Largest

Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar sits near Samaypur on GT Karnal Road, Delhi. It is the biggest Transport Nagar in India and the busiest freight node in the National Capital Region.

I found a report stating that around 2,500 trucks go through the transportation process at a time. Although I could not confirm that figure against an official Delhi government source. But what is not in dispute is the volume: FMCG, auto parts, textiles, electronics, and machinery move out of here to every state.

The Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar runs 24 hours. Days go to booking, documentation and unloading. Nights go to dispatch, once the city's no-entry window lifts.

Transport Nagar Contact Numbers and Details 2026

A Transport Nagar has no single helpline. It is a zone with hundreds of independent businesses inside it, not one organisation. Here is what you can actually call.

National level

All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) is the apex body for road transport operators in India. Use it for disputes, policy questions and strike-related updates.
Address: 1/16A Asaf Ali Road, New Delhi 110002
Email: aimtc1936@gmail.com

Development Authority

The development authority owns the land and handles plot allotment, road maintenance and encroachment complaints. For the Varanasi Transport Nagar project:
Vice-Chairman's office: 0542-2282455
Secretary's office: 0542-2280326

Finding a transporter

Skip the random mobile numbers. Go to the transport association office inside the nagar and ask for members running your route. Before paying anything, check the transporter's GST number and take a written bilty. Advance payment to an unverified number is the most common freight fraud in India.

How a Transport Nagar Is Different From Other Logistics Facilities

Transport nagars are not dedicatedly designed for storage, customs work or rail movement. For that, there are three facilities below; each does one of those jobs better.

Logistics Park

A logistics park is privately developed and leased out as ready warehouse space. It offers Grade-A sheds, dock levellers, racking, fire systems and temperature control. Tenants are 3PL companies, e-commerce firms and large brands, not individual truck owners.

Use a logistics park when you need to store inventory. Use a Transport Nagar when you need to move it. Bhiwandi does both, which is why it dominates west India.

ICD (Inland Container Depot)

An ICD is a customs-bonded facility inland from a port. Import and export containers are cleared here instead of at the port itself, which cuts port congestion and moves clearance closer to the factory.

An ICD handles containers and customs paperwork. Tughlakabad ICD in Delhi is the best-known example.

MMLP (Multi-Modal Logistics Park)

An MMLP is the newest and largest of the four. Built under Bharatmala through public-private partnership, it connects road, rail and sometimes waterways at a single site, with warehousing, customs and container handling built in.

An MMLP is planned infrastructure at national scale. The MMLP at Nagpur shows the difference in ambition.

What's Changing in Transport Nagars in 2026

Relocation

Cities are pushing old nagars further out as land values rise. Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Jaipur all have projects running.

Integration with MMLPs

Bharatmala corridors and dedicated freight corridors are reshaping where freight naturally collects. Some Transport Nagars will feed MMLPs. Others will lose volume to them.

Digital Booking

Load-matching apps let a shipper reach a truck owner directly, without a broker desk. The physical nagar still holds the trucks, the labour and the workshops, so it has not gone away. The commission layer is the part under pressure.

Cleaner Fuel

New master plans include EV charging and LNG points. Older nagars have no space to retrofit them.

Driver Welfare

Rest rooms, toilets and dormitories now appear in project reports. Varanasi's plan includes a police station, fire station and healthcare facility on site.
